Why doesn't my moss get the thick moss heads that I see in photos?

Give it time to grow out.
Clumping all the heads together helps.

Ill move them to a cup, thanks! And should I keep them on peat and perlite or on dead sphag?

I agree with Max, give it some more time and it will get clumpier. Also, more light won't hurt, as sphagnum tends to do that as it gets etiolated.

Both work fine, for me it's dead LFSM but for most others it's peat.
You can test what is better-growing for you.

Difficult to tell from the photo even when blown up, but at least some of it looks like a carpet moss rather than Sphagnum in which case you will never get big round heads. If you get Sphagnum keep it wet warm and give it light and you will get what you desire.
