I let the stem reach a height of 3cm (just over an inch) before snipping it and planting it in the same pot it was growing in, as recommended by Giovanni.
what sort of chances of succeeding do you think i have? high? low?

I would say high, I planted between 50-60 flower stems last year and I can only remember 2 not taking.

Hi olliesara,

Do you have some sphagnum laying around?
If yes, I'd put some around the flower stem.

Last year I tried with both sphagnum and without and found it didn't make much difference (but the two I lost was without)

The only problem with sphagnum is you need to keep cutting it back because it will swamp the flower stem if left.

I think 4 weeks is too early to see any signs if it's planted like that. I'm sure there are little buds under the soil layer. In 6 weeks it's possible.
