Hey everyone,

I was offered some nice veitchii but I can only get one. My options are:
N. veitchii [(k)2 x (Candy striped x Candy)] - $80
N. veitchii (k)1 x (m)3 - $60
N. veitchii (k)1 x (m)2 - $60
N. Veitchii (m)1 x (m)3 - $40

Which one will get the best body color, stripes, flared paristome, and squatness (is this a word?)? I would prefer to spend the least amount of money but let me know what your thoughts are.

Not to take away from the previous ones but might I add a contender? Carnivero has some SG veitchii (#5 x "Pink Candy Cane"), CAR-0102 for sale starting at 45$. Should give some really squat, flared n’ stripy peristome, pink body, Veitchii.

Yeah, I've been watching those too. I thought with a lot of Carnivero veitchii they sometimes become non striped? Is that the best veitchii on their website in your opinion?

I personally like BE-3734 the most as, to me, it looks like the most appealing within feasible reach. However, I did notice that you look like your leaning more towards SG plants. For SG plants, on their website, I would get the one I mentioned previously. I can’t really comment on Veitchii losing their stripe as I don’t have much experience with the species.

(K) and (M) are both EP greges encompassing a wide variety of phenotypes. BE-3734 is also a selection of many clones- both of mine don't produce striped peristomes . Very squat, though! There are many "Candy" clones or variations of that basic description circulating in cultivation- usually most with striped peristomes. Your best bet might be to request photos of the exact parents to gauge what the expected progeny could look like.

I have already asked for pics but never received a reply. They are all bred by Mike Fallen though so I can probably find some on his Instagram. Thanks! I can try to keep this thread updated.

OK here we go

(k)1 x (m)2 - You can ignore the veitchii on the left on the pic with two plants. The non-striped (m) is what the picture is for:

I think it's kinda obvious now but I don't know if I want to spend $80 on my second nepenthes. Might not be the smartest idea but idk.

Edit: Do I do it and go for the K x CS x C? It's $80 - a lot for one plant, esspecially from a 13yo standpoint - but it would probably be super beautiful. But then again, I might just be happy with one of the cheaper plants. I'm so indecisive!!!!!

Idk about you but i would definitely get the KCSC If I had the money. At the same time, I know how hard it is to get money without actually being able to have a proper job. In fact, the only way I’m able to have what I have is by working my butt off mowing lawns, making contracts with my parents, & being hired by friends to do nasty jobs that even they don’t want to do themselves. However with that being said, I would still get the KCSC just because of how beautiful it is. If you have keiki paste, you can make your money back in like 3 months if the plant is big enough.

Edit: Some places give you a discount if you leave an item in your cart long enough, I.e. cross exotics just gave me a discount for leaving a Truncata passion red in my cart for like a week. Just thought I’d let you know.

Ok, good to know about that discount thing! The KCSC is an xs seedlings so it'll take years to get a basal or something to sell and get my money back. I'll probably get it cause that's not something you can really pass on!

(but then again, I also want a glandulifera and I might be happy with a different veitchii....)

Why are the veitchii so much? I just got one for 20 from predatory plants.

I think it depends on parentage, as well as size. I know that my 3 seed grown N. veitchii are all worth different amounts. I can't really speak on two because I got them in a bundle of sorts but one of them was $50.

If there was an analogy to this, I'd go with, say, show dogs. Even in one breed of dogs, those that display characteristics that fare better in shows tend to be more expensive, or the breeder keeps them in order to enter them into said shows and maybe breed them, too. If there was a show dog of the Nepenthes world, N. veitchii would be it.

Some veitchii are insanely colorful and stripped (take candy dreams for example) while other may not be as colorful and crazy.

Well there's no way to know because they are seed grown.

Right, you will get genetic diversity, but you can always expect a mix between both parent plant. If they both have stripes you are pretty much guaranteed stripes. if they both have a flared paristome, you can expect flared paristomes on the offspring.
