Is this white layer on my Sarr. normal? I've seen a few of them have it but not sure if its from age or what.

Oh the lighter-colored photo that freshly chewed area looks like grazing strips/lines where something moved along chewing as it went. I'm not sure what would do that...slugs, as Panman mentioned, or maybe something with more "teeth", like a caterpillar. Dig around in the top dressing, you might find something hiding there. There's nothing that it could be rubbing against is it?

I found a cutworm in the top layer of the peat of one of my Sarrs. The only evidence was some shiny webbing on the rhizome. Scratch around in the pot and see if anything is hiding in there.
