I got an article in my news today about this plant, thought to be extinct in North America, but apparently now it has been re-discovered. There are several species, all but one in the southern hemisphere. They make some very beautiful tiny flowering bodies, some remind me of tiny pitchers. Unfortunately, their biology is similar to Indian Pipes, and cultivating them would be impossible.
Look up this genus for some fascinating pictures of their colorful flowers.

I don't believe T. americana has been rediscovered, but recently T. kobensis was found in Japan again a short ways away from the discovery site (now destroyed by development). I find it very possible that similar non-photosynthetic, parasitic plants are still hiding out somewhere but aren't recognized simply because nobody is searching for them... hopefully that situation is true for T. americana.
