Somethings been bothering me for awhile. When someone lists a soil mix as 1:1 sand, peat, are they referring to by weight or volume. I ask this, because all the posts I see that make the 1:1 comparison gloss over whether it is volume or weight. I think it might be weight, because volume in a 1:1 peat, sand mix seems like pure sand, but I'm not sure. So can someone please help clarify this.

Eyeball it. Volume. A pile of peat and a comparable pile of sand.

Make sure it's coarse silica/quartz sand.

I count dry scoops. As far as I've ever noticed peat doesn't swell enough when hydrated to make that big of a difference in the mix ratio.

Peat doesn't swell too much, but wet peat does pack FAR better than dry peat and that can significantly affect your measurements. I usually measure out mostly dry peat packed fairly well, to match the same volume of sand.
