So far, so good with the sand topping. No moss, algae or anything else yet...

Looks great Adam! I have sand on a few of my Cephs, and I really like the look. I saw somoene using black sand from Petsmart for a topping, and it really made the plants colors look much more vibrant. I saw the same sand he was using at the store, but they wanted $22 for a small-medium sized bag. I know that will probably last me, but I really didn't want to spend that much... maybe next year.

Just before I put the sand on, I ripped out all the moss which was starting to grow quite thick. I don't think it will be coming back to the pot anytime soon. :D

Just make sure its silica sand / quartz, atleast for fly traps. Not to sure what soil is supposed to be used for cephs...

Hey Adam- where'd you find your sand? I've been searching the Home Depots and Rona's here in Victoria and seem to be coming up short :?

Looking good Adam and it should do the trick in keeping the moss, etc away.
I will be interested to hear if you have any "issues" down the line, but would expect that will not be the case.
Peace!

I get my sand at Home Depot here, it is called "Pool Filter Sand" by Pavestone, its sold out in the garden center area in big bags. Rinse it a couple times and its good to go!

Ah- see I was looking for sandblasting sand. Maybe changing my tactic would get me more success.

And I really don't need much, so a big bag won't help me. Too bad I don't have a friend with a pool, or a sandblaster.

I got this sand at a local nursery. Not sure about how pure it is. So just to make sure, I'm flushing out the media once a week and top watering till the tray over flows.
