For really cheap seedling type pots (the six and eight packs that young plants are often sold in ) and even supercheap pots to begin with, I tend to go and look in the trash area of places like Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Menards. Lotta times I’m able to find ones that still have the soil in them (dead, plant included ). So I dump the soil and former occupant out and just take the pots —- and they’re free.

I have done this in the past, but technically, they are still the property of the store. Taking trash is technically theft, and some stores are more particular about it than others.

I picked up these 7x7x9” pots pretty cheap.
I calculated having 24 shipped to me and the cost with shipping comes to $2.37 each. For a pot that size, and a sturdy one, that isn't a bad price. And white, too. ;)

Would an employee giving you permission to get the trash items make it legal? I've asked before and was given permission. It's like "Hey, can I have those dead plants?"...and the answer, while looking at me strangely, is "Uh, yeah, sure.". I'll be laying awake at night worrying that the Lowe's Special Forces (overweight, rosy-cheeked millennials dressed in blue/white with red trim aprons) will be raiding my house. :?

+1

I had asked an employee at the customer service station, they gave me a weird look, and said” sure, knock yourself out.”

I believe these are the same pots Amazon sells for $11.

That $11 is for just ONE pot? You definitely have to watch Amazon, they're just as bad as Wallyworld and the other BM stores about slipping in an inflated price on items sometimes.

I got these awhile back. Round not square but the price is good.

While doing some garage cleaning last week I ran across some old office wastebaskets in various shapes and sizes; oval square, rectangular. All were pretty deep and sturdy and would work well for large or multiple Sarrs. You'd have to drill the holes, and setting them in a water tray could pose a challenge. If the prices are good (I have no idea what office stuff goes for) they may be an untapped resource?

They would probably be okay but may lack UV resistance. I’ve found that to be an issue when using clear storage containers in the sun.
