I have been looking into preserving some of my plants genetics by using tissue culture. Over time they develop issues such as hermaphroditic traits, and slow rooting times. I believe that this is caused from the decline in the health of my Mother plants.

My plan is to purchase a wine fridge because it will control humidity, and temperature. There are two types. Normal refrigerators and “silent” fridges that are thermoelectric. The thermoelectric version is not great at lowering the temperature because it pushes hot air out, rather than producing cold air.

What is ideal?

Many years ago, we purchased a dairy refrigerator from a K-Mart that was closing and retrofitted it with a florist thermostat. If cultures were allowed to grow on fresh medium for a week or so, then sealed and bagged, we had modest success with storing them for up to 6 months at a time. You may also wish to place a bit of desiccant in the bag to absorb excess moisture. Discouraging the growth of mold is perhaps the highest concern.
