Is it ok to leave my flytrap outside when it goes dormant? I hope I can, because my mom would be terrified about seeing a frozen venus fly trap in a ziplock bag in the refrigerator.

It depends how cold it gets where you live. I'm not sure that they can tolerate freezing, but perhaps if it doesn't get too far below zero (or 32F) you can leave it outside while mulching the top of the soil. I'm sure the experts will let you know. =)

Mulching is putting a layer of bark mulch over the soil in order to protect it from the cold. It will still get cold, but I believe it's quite good at retaining heat. Though his may only work if it's planted in the ground? I hadn't thought of that... Hmm...

Where do you live Caleb? As tael said, if your weather never gets down below freezing, or rarely gets below freezing, you can leave it outside all year. If you live somewhere that it gets very cold in the winter, you'll have to find another way to provide dormancy.

I live in MD, so I guess he could stay outside for the dormant season.

Hah, ok, well based on your IP address, you live in Salisbury, MD. Assuming that's close to where you live, you should be able to leave your plant outside most of the year. It looks like you get some fairly cold days in the winter and you might have to bring your plant in or protect it somehow if it gets too far below freezing.
