No, sorry, that was confusing wording. They definitely like moistened substrate no matter what it is - I meant to delineate dead moss from live moss. You can use either for the whole process, but I've found that live moss swallows up the unsprouted seeds very easily, while the dried/dead stuff tends to grow algae after it's been sitting a while, so if I had the ability I would use both for different phases

Do these plants grow in 100% sphagnum or 50/50 sphagnum and perlite?

I think either will work fine as long as you rinse the perlite very well. Others have reported that seeds in contact with the perlite haven't sprouted, so maybe just cover it with a super fine layer of moss over the top before you sow.
