I unintentionally revived some sphagnum moss and it was green. After a few months the sun started to hit throughout my window and now it is turning red. Now that I think about it there were some dead red pieces, so probably those revived.

Cool. And to think I had to pay for my red moss. I might try this just to see if I can get mine to do the same. I am currently growing my own red moss now. I purchased a small tin of it and now have several dishes of it just barely starting new growth.

That looks more like humic acid building up in the tips. I could be wrong, but sphagnum doesn't typically get a blush of color on certain spots. It either all colors up, or it doesn't.

It seems I've read that humic acid can be "rinsed off". Could you take a piece of paper towel/tissue and rub it across the moss and if it's humic acid won't it rub off onto the tissue? :?:

My red moss starts out green then turns red as it matures.

I don’t think it’s humic acid. The light probably makes it look brownish but it is more on the red side. Also I have another pot on top of the moss so only the red side that gets direct sun filtered through the pot. Also I have seen sphagnum turning red only on top.
