I noticed this started growing by itself.

It's hard to say. If it has been that size for 3 months then I would say it is just colored dead moss. That's just my opinion, though.

It hasn't been that size for that long , because I split it up and planted some of it in other places to see if it would stay the same red color.

There is a red type of sphagnum, although it grows kind of slow. Here's some of mine:

Please note that even the red types of sphagnum will be green until they get enough light ... and that may be a quite a bit. I've had trays of sphagnum that were all green, put them until artificial lights and had red popping up out of nowhere.

Here's some I've had going since last fall. It was all green when I got it. It seems like it has filled in good. I had it outside until it got cold and freezing (well, as cold and freezing as it usually gets down here) and then moved it into the trailer and let it catch the light falling from the side of my grow lights. It's been outside again for probably a month or two now. Some areas in the pan have taken on kind of a reddish-gold tint while other areas are staying green. I've worried some that it might be dying and that was why it was changing color, but it seems to keep getting thicker and appears healthy so I guess it's ok...?
