If you have no other option then you have to use tap water. You can have 3 results. The plant dies quickly from very high dissolved solids in the water. The plant dies slowly from moderately high dissolved solids in the water. The plant grows fine. Unless you are lucky on well water, one of the first two options is the most likely. If you can order a TDS meter, I highly recommend it. Another option is an aquarium test kit that tests for general hardness (gH) and carbonate hardness (kH). Outside of that, you have no options.
Question, do you have a problem with calcium buildup in the toilet or the drains of the sink or tub?
