I'm aware that VFTs secrete chitinase to "soften up" insect exoskeletons, helping to let in the digestive enzymes and to let out the products of digestion. Is the effect on the exoskeletons visible, say with electron micrographs? I've been searching on line, but haven't found a combination of search terms that gives me what I'm looking for.

Thanks!
