3 years ago, I dropped $10 on a 4.5-inch / 11-centimeter pot containing a number of small plants. The following spring, I unpotted and divided, found 9 plants, and repotted in an 8-inch / 20-centimeter pot. Here they are now, coloring up nicely in the summertime heat and humidity.

I didn't think there were that many plants in the pot, can't beat getting them for $1.11 each (even if they were only 2 inches tall at the time). This is an easy-to-grow Sarracenia hybrid. If you want to get one, Bergen Water Gardens & Nursery (just outside of Rochester, New York) sells them for $15.

Oh wow really? Yeah I love the colors and patterns of this one. I don’t think I saw it before your post. I mean I still haven’t seen most of what everyone else probably has lol, but eventually just scrolling eBay or google to look at the pretty’s might catch me up.

Would it be silly to buy in August though? I feel like it might be better to wait until spring, but maybe it just feels to me like we’re very close to dormancy. I have no idea why.

And yes I it sounds like a good investment for sure. Thanks for the tip :D

I got this one from Pikes Nursery for $12 a couple of years ago. It just got a repot this spring so it is not too happy.

Hey thank you all for the great tips on where to look when I’m ready. I might try getting like a wee one that can skip dormancy this year, but I think I’ll probably just wait until spring. I was looking at eBay again for Sarrs this time and I should never look lol.

I've purchased Sarracenia as late as October and had no trouble getting them settled in before dormancy started. If Bergen ships it potted, that makes it even easier: no root disturbance, just slightly miffed at being put in a box, in the dark, for 3 or 4 days of shipping.

I have bought in the dead of winter, potted and placed in garage with other dormant plants and only lost a couple and they were replaced. You can get some great deals in the winter.
