Hey everyone,

I had this really cool idea for growing a Pinguicula right out of a rock as a growing container. I want to use a relatively simple species for this, such as P. moranesis, P. vulgaris, or P. "Sethos". Any pointers on which type of rock I should use? I was thinking about insulating rock or lava rock standing in water. Any suggestions from people who have has experience with this technique? Thanks,

yes the lava rock seem's to be the go , with pings , the rock I am about to use is called scorria , its in a bit lump with lost of small holes to put the small roots in , with a small amount of mix , just have not got round to doing it as yet

Thanks for your help, the scorria rock seems to be an ideal choice. Hoping to enter some CP contests! I'll try to get the rock installed as soon as I can. Do you know if regular landscaping centers would have scorria? Thanks, and good luck with your Pinguicula experiments in the future.

really have not a clue where to look for these larger rocks , had mine given to me , ,I suppose if you ask you local or larger garden centre specialist , may get some one who may know , will put up a pic of mine too before and after shot , see if I may help you or you can improve on it, will try and get a bit done to day put up pic's tonight

Thanks for all the help, Snapperhead51! I've chosen a Pinguicula moctezumae (had leftover leaf pulling successes ) to use on the scorria. I'll make a visit to my local quarry and see if they have any available. If not, I can get smaller rock fragments from my friend's front yard (uses scorria fragments under bushes) and use insulating stone to piece them together. I hope it will work! all though to day i have the flu , in the green house its nice and warm ,even if its winter time here, so got a bit of strength up and put some pings in the rock, the holes I made lager with a mini jack hammer , , looks ok now , reckon it should look much better when there well established in spring in a few months

Wonderfully done, John. I've grown pinguicula on lava rock in the past and have had success. It's generally better to do it with mature plants though as they already have a good root system.

yes is why I put mainly the larger plants in there , had some seedlings of longafoila so stuck 3 in one of the holes ,see what happens , nice bright posi , so hope they like the new lodgings

That looks wonderful! Unfortunately I can't do something like that due to the winter in here.

How long does it take for the soil and rock to dry out?

its only wet to settle in the plants and clean off the extra mix that was around, it will dry off in just a few hours in my G/H , its winter here and G/h temps have been up to the low 20c day temps till now so will have no affect with the extra water , different winters here , lucky for us

yer not my idea was suggested to me by a friend here , didn't know some one from TF had done it too , where the rock , is it will get some misting so no need to water it , it has potting mix in the holes , we have dispensed with all other ping media's now days here , just use high quality potting mixes with ferts in them , the pings grow great in it , have 2 more projects coming up form the 4 I have planed , 2 done , 1st is not ready for viewing yet involves cephs , the next is a full rock wall to grow pings ,neps,hellis and ceph in or on, all artificial made, it will cove one full section of my G/H wall about 8 x 8 ft approx,will be starting this ,after I get back from a holiday next week. should be interesting, the next will be growing helies in rocks , large limestone rocks with holes jack hammered out will be challenging project as well

John good luck with your projects, if i had your time and greenhouses, I would even make plants grow from the walls!

Woah, that looks great! I have got to start the project, especially if it will look this nice! Again, awesome job, and good luck with the scape. I'm doing mine with some P. moctezumae pullings, but I'll probably wait until they mature. I'll maybe use a different one in the meantime, possibly Pinguicula "Sethos" for a flashy display? One more time, fantastic job.

Also, get well soon! The flu really stinks. Had an episode with that last year.

Absolutely amazing. Almost like mother nature herself made it!
