I read the McPherson book today (Pitcher Plants of the Americas), and even though it was drier reading than say, The Savage Garden, I really enjoyed it. The abundance of gorgeous photos was a major plus. Now I need to flip back through and find all the things I want to add to my wishlist.
I seem to be taking longer. I am just now at the Heliamphora section. I usually end up falling asleep reading them! I have been going back and forth between the 2 I have and my digital books I also have.
I just read this one straight through (except the index and most of the bibliography), and I haven’t started the Schnell book yet. Maybe today.
I liked that he used H. pulchella for all the photos illustrating the effects of different light/growing conditions, first because it’s the prettiest one imo, and second because it’s dramatic coloring made it a good choice to show those changes.
There is some unnecessary repetition of facts and phrases, and there are both spelling errors and a few incorrect statements, but this is still an excellent book, especially when you consider that McPherson wrote it from ages 16-22. I wish his other books were affordable, but as it is, I doubt I’ll ever own another.
