I have a new trap coming and I don't want its top to have the same fate as so many others, so I was wondering how I could prevent this and what I'm doing wrong.

My first thought would be the lack of humidity, and before you say "But I'm in Georgia, that can't be!", remember we just had a weird winter.
RH decreases with temperatures, so we in The South just had lower than normal humidity for the last little while.
I suspect, now that it's warming up (and RH is increasing), it will likely return to keeping the lids.
