Akadama is so expensive because of the import costs :/ I had a friend try to bring in some from Japan and he told me that shipping was ridiculous, something like 40 dollars for the bag I wanted. I've used it a lot for bonsai material and honestly this stuff is actually pretty decent

Only drawback to it is the material will break down over time, doubly so with tray watering and it'll compact the media. Outside = 2 years, I've seen the stuff start breaking down over the course of months when I used it for D. Regia with sitting water. It's great for root development and water retention however.
