Maybe this is it’s way of making sure extra large food gets properly digested.

Many sundews will only expend the energy necessary to get the job done. If that's a large fly that was stuck, but wiggled a lot before dying, then a full curl or more isn't unusual. My Cape "Large Form" has caught a moth once that got wrapped almost two full curls.
