Hi, I was wondering if there’s a specific variety of Pinguicula that is known to be more effective in capturing prey. I have a bunch of pings and I want to put some in my greenhouse which is infested with whiteflies and fungus gnats. I put my cyclosecta, pirroutte, gigantea, ehlersiae, gypsicola, and laueana x Emarginata in the greenhouse for a day and none of them caught a thing! (Cyclosecta caught 1 tiny whitefly) I don’t blame gigantea because it had been recently injured since I dropped it and fell out of its pot.

I put my binata at the same time as the pings and binata slaughtered a lot. I took a closer look at the pings and I was able to see a fungus gnat land on them and then just mock me and walk around and then fly away.

Are there any varieties that are EXTREMELY effective in capturing? Also, what do you think the problem is with my pings not being able to capture? I’ll attach photos tomorrow. They are growing in a windowsill with all my other CPs so light isn’t an issue, they are in peat/perlite/vermiculite mix and they are kept pretty moist since they are supposed to be in carnivorous state. They aren’t dormant because they arrived in mid February from Rainbow CPs.

All help appreciated, thanks so much!

Hi Tib. I'm not a ping expert having only grown them for a few years. Do all your plants have lots of dew on them? I find that the plants with the most dew catch the most gnats. Also my plants that have green leaf colouring seem to do a lot better at attracting gnats. It may take some time for the plants to catch the gnats. Good luck! You could try watering your greenhouse with water that has mosquito dunk in it to kill the fungus gnat larvae.

I notice when the humidity is to high, most pinguicula don't produce as much dew. I only have two pinguicula, but one of the two, Pinguicula gracilis, seems to do great at catching gnats. I'm not sure if there are any other pings that would do better, but in my experience, Pinguicula gracilis seems to do well. Also, Pinguicula gracilis seems to make the most dew for me in high humidity (they're kept in my Heliamphora tank which has humidity usually above 80-90%). I hope this helps!

That’s a good observation! I have also had more catches with the green ones, nice idea for the gnats with the dunk water.

Wow didn’t think that higher humidity would prevent them from making more dew! It’s the opposite of Drosera.

Are you serious! Gracilis is so awesome! I’ve been wanting to get one for a while, they look so cool and if they catch stuff that’s even better! I’ve only seen them at curious plants. I’m curious, where did you get your Gracilis from? Thanks for the recommendation! I was looking for varieties that are more effective and will definitely look into it!

I got my gracilis from curious plant. Now I don't know, but there could be a better Pinguicula for the job. This is just what I've observed in my conditions. Also, my gracilis has made five new growth points from the main one as well as a ton of little babies from under all the foliage and I have no clue what's happening. Do you?

Cool! Moving grow points moving like in a line pattern might be that the ping has crested (crested pings look really cool) but a photo would help see if it’s crested

It doesn’t look crested but it’s dividing! You can split the plantlets into more plants! Just search in youtube for “splitting or dividing Pinguicula”

oh, cool! Now I can "Pay it Forward" for Shadowtski by doing a giveaway! Although, that may not happen very soon though as I really don't want to disturb it again.

I don’t think they are dormant, but you can check the photo to see if they look dormant. Also, Sundews69 was right, I got a Gracilis and Moranensis “A” today and they were covered with a lot of dew and mucilage! I wonder if the 4 in the photo are lacking dew because of low/high humidity, too much light, dormancy, transplant shock, those varieties just don’t produce a lot of dew, etc.

The 4 in photo are: Cyclosecta, pirrouette, Laueauna x emarginata, and Johanna.

Thanks! I really want to see pings killing gnats!

Wow! They're looking great! I've always wanted P. moranensis 'A' but never got around to buying one. Let me know how they end up doing and if they help solve your gnat problem!

Sure! Thanks! :D I’m trying to propagate a bunch of pings right now so if i’m successful and get a bunch, I can send you one or do a trade or something.
