There is only one species of Venus Flytraps, and within the species there are no named varieties. However, through selective breeding programs on the part of nurseries and hobbyists, there are 130 registered cultivars and many more unregistered. Anything that isn’t a cultivar must be listed as a ‘typical’ flytrap but that doesn’t mean there is anything truly typical about it.

For this month’s contest, we are going to honor Dionaea muscipula ‘typical’. Show us your best flytrap that is not a cultivar. It can be giant traps, diminutive size, outstanding color, whatever you find most interesting about the plant. For this contest, we will allow two photos, if you like. One of the entire plant, and one of a closeup of a trap.

As usual, @Matt and Leah from the Flytrap Store are providing a fabulous prize. I spoke with Matt about our typicals contest, and he said, “We have a lot of VERY nice typical flytraps right now, so that will make an excellent prize!” A picture will be forthcoming, but you know it will look amazing.

Here are the rules:
1. They must be your own pictures.
2. You can submit up to 2 photos for this contest.
3. Pictures shared in previous contests are not eligible.
4. Minimally edited photos only. No effects, or filters. Cropping is okay.
5. The winner will be the entry with the highest number of thumbs up (likes) votes.
6. Only votes from members with at least 5 posts will count.
7. This contest is open internationally, although there will be an alternate prize for international winners.

So go grab some great shots and let’s see those typicals shine!

Here's a typical. It's special for absolutely no reason (hence being called typical). But I hope you'll like my post because it's a nice photo.

That is correct, no named cultivars (technically flytraps don't have varieties :D )

Everyone gets at least one vote. ;)

Nothing particularly remarkable about this one except it’s stubborn insistence on staying alive. I got it in a death cube in late fall and promptly “killed” it by accidentally drying it out. It just moved out to a bog pot last week so it’s experiencing outdoor life for probably the first time ever!

Five typicals in this photo!

From the top left, is a seed-grown typical I got from @MikeB last year. I noticed that his flytraps tend to go into "gremlin" mode when the soil gets rotty. This one hasn't been repotted since I received it, and it is expressing its displeasure by putting out traps in all directions.

Next is a Typical that I won in a giveaway from @Hang94 a few months ago. He said his typicals were very vigorous, and wasn't kidding! This thing arrived as a tiny 2" plug and is already filling in my 20 oz cup :)

Bottom right and middle, red cup and white cup are two FTS seed-grown typicals with nifty serrated traps. Frankly I think @Matt sells these guys short by calling them seed-grown typicals ;) He should advertise them as exotic ultra rare-breed artisanal flytraps, name-your-own cultivar :D

Bottom left is a typical that was a Christmas present from @Panman two years ago. It's unique because it has a year-round blush, and the little plant somehow managed to toss up SIX flower stalks this year (unfortunately, I pinched all the flowers off just before the photo contest was announced, otherwise I would have left them on for the picture).

Edit: just noticed we can have 2 photos so here’s a closeup of the FTS typical

This typical almost always has even a little red. At one point the leaves even turned red. The flytrap was originally from Lowe’s. It was also my first CP. Since then, the plant divided into six flytraps.

This flytrap was the first carnivorous plant I ever purchased.

I believe it was a "little pot of horrors" typical.

The growth is very vigerous at its stage in life and it grows very reputable sized traps, could fit my finger in some of its largest!

Just a typical. But special because I grew it from a seed :D I love that it has upright and rosette style.

Since Matt was kind enough to offer one of his typicals as a prize, I will enter one of his typicals to show that his comment about having really nice typicals right now is no idle boast. This was purchased from FTS a little over a month ago, as a mature “classic” flytrap. It is big, very vigorous, and just a beautiful flytrap. The traps show a lovely blush of pink with the upper left hand trap in pic 2 measuring 1 3/8”. I liked it so much I bought another..just as nice but totally different! As usual, FTS VFT’S rock!
