I take a toothpick and gently poke at the outside Gemmae , pushing them away from the center of the plant toward the outside.
If they're ripe and ready, they should launch away with a springing action, some end up almost a foot away from the mother plant.
Sometimes I gently grasp the plant between thumb and forefinger of one hand, and pop off the inside Gemmae if they don't leap away at first touch.
YMMV but that's how I do it.
