So I've been thinking about the best way to cool a highland tank. I've decided not to grow plants inside of a freezer or wine chiller, since I've heard horror stories of them freezing people's plants, and because of the limited space they provide. I'm using an Exo-Terra 36x18x18 but I've blocked off the ventilation to keep humidity up. Obviously I'll have to have fans to make sure there is air movement, but right now I'm trying to figure out the best way to cool it. The temperature around it is mid seventies most of the time, and it's in my basement. I need to cool it down to below 65. If anyone has any ideas, I'm willing to DIY it.

Rammplins has a killer thread on building a peltier cooler. Maybe if you use a few of those plus insulation it'll work? The peltier coolers work a lot better when the room temperature is lower. I've had one for like 2 months and the main problem was just that the fan that blows the cool air into the tank needs to be waterproof and the pre made one's don't come with a waterproof fan. Theres also the aquarium chiller hooked up to a radiator and water reservoir option too but thats probably gonna be more expensive.

I noticed that as well. Know any good ones to buy?

This guy is what I use:
https://www.amazon.com/Tian-120mm-WATER ... oof+fan%2B

The quality is great, I ran mine nonstop in 90-100% humidity for about 10 months straight before it pooped out on me, and I think that was my fault because I got the wires wet when I was fiddling around with it (although it was getting a little crusty).
The only problem is the smallest size they come in is 90mm, that is a little big to fit onto the 40mm heatsink most pre-built peltier coolers use.

here's one I got that fits the peltier cooler. It's supposed to be IP57 and so far it seems like it is and hasn't broken cuz of the water dripping through it. The website has a ton of other fans too that are waterproof just do a search with the fan rating of i think at least IP56 or above.

Not sure if these will fit the peltiers you guys are talking about but as far as waterproof fans go these are the best, hands down. They are a little pricey compared to what has already been posted but they also come with a pretty nice speed controller. There is no picture of the entry level offing on the website so here's the one I got - 120mm basic waterproof -

Waterproof Pro 80mm or 120mm - this one is backed by a one year warranty

The "Store" for 120v products. They also have the best sonic foggers I have used, and I've tried a BUNCH! Foggers are backed by a 2 year warranty when the teflon coating option is selected. Again, a little pricey but this is not novelty Chinese junk like the ones on amazon, these are VERY high output.

Hope this helps. Happy growing,
