The general rule of thumb for putting water into the pitchers is, if the lids are vertical, then they have evolved to catch rain so it is necessary in the digestive process, if the lid id horizontal and covering the pitcher, then it is there to prevent the ingress of rain so it probably makes digestive enzymes and doesn't need water in the porcess.
That said it is on a bit of water say a 1/4 of the pitcher.
