Sometimes they can go dormant for no apparent reason. I've had pot full of seedlings and had at least one go dormant occasionly, it started growing in a month or so and grew strong as nothing had happened.

Things that can trigger dormancy by my experience are:
1. Stress: low temperature, drought, heat, high light intensity
2. Light cycle: as day gets shorter, they can start entering hibernation if not supplied with a few hours of additional light.
3. Physical damage: damaged roots can also follow plant decline and formation of hibernacula. If it doesn't re-root in time, it usually dies off.
